Vision, Gesture, Experiment… – An Exhibition of Autonomous Animated Film Art Organized by Műcsarnok - Kunsthalle Budapest

This exhibition explores a significant yet lesser-known field of Hungarian animation history: autonomous animated filmmaking.

The selection focuses on independent animation efforts in Hungary, presenting works created in the country through three thematic approaches, each showcased in one of Műcsarnok’s central halls.

Vision: The first hall presents three visionary artists—József Gémes, Marcell Jankovics, and Sándor Reisenbüchler—alongside our collegue Áron Gauder, whose emblematic works greet visitors with a glimpse into their personal animation philosophies.

Gesture: The second hall features a selection from Hungary’s rich auteur animation heritage. These films convey deeply personal messages, each bearing the unmistakable stylistic, technical, or dramaturgical signature of its creator.

Experiment: The third hall showcases some of the most groundbreaking and unconventional animated works—films that challenge categorization and redefine the limits of the moving image.

The exhibition will be opened by György Szegő, Artistic Director of Műcsarnok -Kunsthalle Budapest, and Béla Ternovszky, Kossuth and Balázs Béla Award-winning animation director. The curator is Éva M. Tóth, Balázs Béla Award-winning animation filmmaker.

The exhibition runs until April 28.
