The animated feature film project Back to Tomioka has been selected for the CEE Animation 2026 Pitching Projects programme, one of Europe’s key animation co-production and financing forums.
The film is being developed as an international co-production. Alongside Foliascope (FR), @WJTEAM (PL), and @WRONG MEN (BE), Hungarian partner Cinemon Entertainment is also involved in the project, with Réka Temple as Hungarian co-producer. The film’s producers are @ilan.urroz , Anna Mroczek, and Benoît Roland, with @francoismarcbaillet as director and @Laurent Galandon as writer.
Back to Tomioka is a sensitive animated feature about two siblings who, orphaned after the Fukushima disaster, grow up together in a refugee camp, sharing an unbreakable bond. After their grandmother’s death, Osamu refuses to let her final wish be forgotten. Together with his younger sister, he embarks on a dangerous journey through the restricted zone to fulfil her last wish and bring her back to their hometown of Tomioka.
The film is a story about family, loss, the connection to one’s home, and hope — set in a region where life is slowly returning.
